We want to be a space that can be communally shared by both local and international creative practitioners from different disciplines, and the public. We want to be a rhizomatic network not unlike that of a mycelium, making up a constellation of intersections, where play, experimentation, collaboration, and purposeful exchanges of skills, knowledge, ideas, and experiences can take place.
We want to create a community fueled by the vigor and care of kinship. In the same manner that our ancestors valued their tribe, we believe that creative growth can flourish through togetherness, rather than individualism. Critical discourse about art and culture cannot be done alone. Thus, inquiries, confrontations, and responses to artistic and cultural production are regarded as a collective exercise.
ANIMA Art Space is an independent artist-run space located in Quezon City. It was founded in 2022 by artists Kean Barrameda and Yaoke.
ANIMA’s values and visions are inspired by the tradition of animism. In Latin, the word “anima” means “life, breath, soul, spirit”. It is the root word of Animism, a belief that sees both animate and inanimate as interconnected living things inhabited by “spirits”.
ANIMA’s programs, and projects are then anchored to the notion of the interconnectedness of things. This core value is what inspires and propels us to participate in cooperative and collective practices.
As a space, ANIMA can morph and take on different forms. The space welcomes diverse artistic projects.
It can be a site for exhibits, talks, performances, workshops, screenings, book club meet-ups, pop-ups and markets,
cooking sessions, salo-salo’s, and everything in between and beyond, depending on the needs of its community.
